Money problems can be tracked back to one’s lack of self esteem and self worth.  In the current culture, magazines, movies, television and many radio shows insinuate that money and what money buys can make you happy.  We learn from childhood that we need to wear the right clothes to be accepted and as we age it becomes the car we have to drive, where we live and the crowds we hang out with that garners approval from others.  Money becomes an overwhelming common denominator to what will bring us extreme joy and happiness.

Fiscal responsibility starts with the acknowledgements, “I am not my shoes; I am not my house; I am not my job and who I am is not contingent on how much money I have in the bank.”  The antidote to compulsive spending is to seek purpose in one’s life rather than to live by the axiom anything money can buy will make me happier than anything in the world.  The latter statement is just simply not true.
