Being Who You Are For You

In a session with my personal trainer this morning he told me that a mutual friend had lost 70 pounds in one year. I was a tad envious and wanted to know what had motivated this beefed-up 39 year-old gentleman. “He wanted to look good for a new woman; he just divorced and is getting back in the dating game.”

Ugh! Okay, so he got good results from a bad idea. I don’t recommend doing anything to please someone else. Looking good to snare a girlfriend or boyfriend is not the proper motivation. Getting healthy through diet and exercise for oneself is why any of us should change our eating habits and shape the body. Trying to look good for someone else is diminishing the importance of doing it for you.

Oftentimes, a person will go through the Sedona Intensive to try to save a marriage or hold onto a job or to get the Court System off his back. We put the emphasis on discovering who you really are with the help of our great team of therapists rather than helping you become who someone else needs for you to be. Truth be told, a lot of people who graduate from the Sedona Intensive come to the conclusion that their marriage has gone about as far as it can go, or their job no longer works for them and that having their feet held to the fire by the Court System helped them to stop drinking or drugging. It is very important always to be true to you in all of your affairs.

A Random Act of Kindness

The third week of January this year 10-year-old Andrew Jentil of Phoenix, Arizona, who has diabetes, gave up his miniature horse Zig-Zag to be auctioned at a benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Laurie and Bud Florkiewicz and Lou and Pat Adimare of Phoenix pooled their monies with a winning bid of $6,000.00. The two couples turned around and gave the horse back to Andrew. Andrew has decided to use Zig-Zag as a therapy horse for children with diabetes.

With all the reports of terrorism, brutality and hostility rife in the world, it is heartening to read about people who receive to share by letting their hearts guide them to make a little boy happy. Can this be an example for you to look right in front of you to see whose life you can change—where you can replace sadness with joy and end bias with tolerance?
Gift Giving - Light Foundation Scholarship

The Light Foundation Scholarship Fund, a not-for-profit organization created by several Sedona Intensive graduates, recently received its official 501(c)(3) status. These appreciative graduates, who felt that their lives had been changed forever, wanted to give back by helping those with limited financial resources to uncover their authentic selves through this life-altering experience. We compliment these individuals for their selfless acts of generosity.

No candidate is ever given a full scholarship-each recipient must make a partial financial investment themselves. As we come to the end of the tax year, please give generously to help those who need to change their lives have the chance to do so. Further information regarding scholarship applications and making tax-deductible contributions is available at www.lightfoundationscholarship.org.

The Signs of the Times

The Sun goes into Pisces on February 18th (which happens to be my 27th sobriety birthday) and the Moon will be in Pisces as well—which means that we will begin the Neptunian-ruled cycle with a touch of mysticism. But we Pisceans always need to be aware of trying to live in air castles. Since Mercury went into retrograde on February 15th, remember to pay close attention to details. Don’t let the sometimes (okay, too much of the time) “airy-fairy” predisposition of Pisces put you into any precarious situations.

Count your change, triple-check documents and don’t start anything new under this three-week time frame.

But there are some days to honor: February 19th, President’s Day; February 21st, Ash Wednesday, March 4th, Purim (a Jewish holiday that commemorates the deliverance of all the Jews from Hayman of the Persian Empire, who had a plot to exterminate them) and March 8th, International Women’s Day.

There is a Solar Eclipse New Moon at 28 degrees of Pisces on March 18th.  Many astrologers view eclipses with gloom and doom, but I see them as opportunities to face things you’ve been neglecting; to let go of the old and embrace the new; sign a new lease on life.

Practically, direct confrontation, deliberate action and keen observation are your best strategies under this aspect. Stamina and will power are needed to get to the bottom of things.

There is a potential for personal awakening as the planet Pluto (yes, I still use this recently discarded planet by “what do they know scientists” to interpret what it means to you and me and in the world) is stimulated by a stressful square from both the Sun and the Moon in Pisces. The eclipse will most affect mutable signs: Virgo, Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius.

PISCES (February 18 – March 20)

Virgo

With the Solar Eclipse New Moon in your sign towards the end of the Pisces cycle, prepare yourself for changes that will take you places you’ve only dreamed. To embrace the new, let go of old ideas and outdated paradigms. Uranus is breaking up the landscape around you—so keep the pure gold and throw out the worthless. There is an old adage in sober circles: make it tough going in and it will be easier coming out; make it easy going in and it will be tough coming out.

ARIES (March 21 – April 20)

Virgo

You’d do well to look over those legal papers and take the high road to resolution. Rather than waste too much time and money on the dole, come up with a sure-fire proposition instead. “The time has come the walrus said…” to market test your big ideas before you seek financial support for them. You’re in a creative wave that will still be with you a month, so slow down—not your strong suit—and let things gel a while longer.

TAURUS (April 21 – May 20)

Virgo

The Solar Eclipse New Moon will make a powerful sextile to Taurus, which means that your creativity will shine for six months. Actually, my intuition tells me that you bulls are going to be able to forgive and be forgiven, to live and let live like never before. Your usual temperament is to hold on to resentments like a mad dog on a bone, but now is the time to let bygones be bygones. Your energy field is about to turn powerfully positive.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

Virgo

If you feel like your get-up-and-go has got up and went, count your blessings. It may be time to unload old ideas and start with a new lease on life. If you have analyzed your financial situation and found a little room on your credit card, take off for a wild adventure; definitely look at life from another point of view. The Solar Eclipse is definitely telling you it is time to let go of some stinkin’ thinkin’ and open up to a fresh new way to live.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22)

Virgo

If you are feeling stranded this month, suck it up and live with it. Jupiter in Sagittarius is not doing you any favors because you like to control and Sag likes to self-legislate. Take solace in the eclipse which is going to mean a raise at work or better yet, a promotion. If your current career has run its course, check in with yourself and see what your soul knows and wants you to do.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Virgo

Saturn gets a bad rap from the uninformed, because the good news is that you lions and lionesses will be better, stronger and more effective after the Cosmic Cop finishes his run through Leo on September 3. Your dress will look better at the debutante ball and your ability to pay will be a lock (that is if you’ve got anything left from your reckless abandon years of debauchery). Rebirth for you Leos is in the Fall, if at all.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

Virgo

I don’t care what sound reason and fluff and puff have to say about you virgins this month but I am betting that you take your cryptic critical selves less seriously and love, love, love this Piscean cycle. A tip how to do it: remember that life is not a math problem and that we are all doing the best we can with what we have left—even you! Lighten up and let your deep wells of love flow freely. (Psst: A new friend around the 4th of March).

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

Virgo

Your diplomatic calling card brings you great rewards this month—if you can remember that making up your mind is your weak suit. Around the 10th of March you can grab the golden ring if you remember that weighing and balancing matters comes easily to you. The one caveat for you in the Piscean cycle is in matters of the heart: don’t pay too big a price for a love affair that has gone as far as it can go.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

Virgo

Patience and hard work is about to let you see a break in the dark clouds of indecision and frustration in a career move. Although you think that somebody has been standing in your way or blocking your success, look again. It may be your own dark side playing a game it can’t win: subterfuge and blame. If you can trust that nobody can play a part like you can, soon you will be taking bows for a job well done.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20)

Virgo

Every dog has its day…and every twelve years your ruler Jupiter comes home to the sign it rules, Sagittarius. Make the most of a good thing: take a risk, start a business or go away—far away. This is a good time to study something that interests you and that can also be financially rewarding to you. The old adage, “do what you love and the money will follow,” describes the cycle you are currently in. Enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19)

Virgo

While everyone else is skating, you’re still tying your laces; when all your friends are raking in the dough from this upscale stock market, you’re still doing the math. And right you should be true to your nature at this time: caution, question and reason in all areas of your life will make you feel more secure within yourself—except in one area of your life: home and hearth. Open your wallet for a make-over. Property values rise with upkeep.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 17)

Virgo

Mars in Aquarius is going to add some “get up and go” to your energy and interest in all matters that affect your sense of interconnectedness. When you get an idea that can benefit yourself and others, run it by someone you respect and then go for the goal. Mercury will retrograde back into your Sun sign, so be more cautious with documents, insurance policies, rental agreements and long-term legal commitments. Beware the Ides of March—a power day for your Water Bearers.

Gratitude In Action

Some days I wake up anxious and fearful about life, and get irritated and impatient with myself and others. My initial reaction is to beat myself up for having gone astray from the zone of clarity. It is funny how my mind plays tricks on me thinking that I will never have a bad day when I am in the flow, and that I will never have a good day when I am off kilter. I have to remember that I am not who I think I am. Fortunately, I have learned to act myself into right thinking because thinking my way into right acting may never come to pass. Sometimes I think that a shopping spree will turn me around; it does, until the bills come in. Instead, taking my horse Magic for a ride to the creek does wonders to alter my attitude. Going to the gym for a workout burns that excessive mental energy. And nothing works quite like sitting down and writing a gratitude list. Being grateful for the blessings in my life is a sure-fire fix for bringing me back to center. If you can relate to my dilemma, check in with yourself to see what action you are taking to get right sized.
